Our Commitment to Quality: Certifications & Industry Standards

Our Commitment to Quality Standards

At Fenliy, located at 47-18 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City, NY 11101, USA, we handcraft every piece to meet or exceed the most demanding material and environmental standards in the furniture industry. We source exclusively from suppliers who hold relevant third-party certifications, and our process is guided by the same benchmarks that govern those programs.

01

Sustainably Sourced Wood (FSC-Aligned Suppliers)

We source timber exclusively from mills and distributors whose supply chains comply with FSC Chain of Custody principles — meaning wood is traceable to legal, responsibly managed forests. Every board we select must come with documentation of its origin, mill location, and harvest date.

  • We do not purchase from mills that cannot trace origin within their supply chain
  • Preferred species: North American black walnut, white oak, and hard maple from regional suppliers
  • We verify supplier documentation on every material order at our Long Island City workshop
  • 100% Solid Hardwood: Every timber piece is selected for its unique grain character
02

CARB Phase 2 Compliant Materials

California’s Air Resources Board (CARB) Phase 2 regulation limits formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products. All engineered materials (plywood, MDF, particleboard) used in our builds are sourced exclusively from CARB Phase 2 compliant suppliers.

  • Formaldehyde limit: <0.05 ppm for hardwood plywood cores (CARB standard)
  • Solid wood components contain no added formaldehyde binders
  • Documentation available upon request for any project – email support@fenliy.com
03

Low-VOC & Eco-Conscious Finishes

We never use harsh chemical varnishes. We protect our woodwork using pure, organic natural waxes and oils, keeping your living spaces safe, organic, and beautiful. Our finish system targets emissions well below 50 g/L VOC — designed to maintain healthy indoor air quality.

  • Natural waxes & oils: <50 g/L VOC (EPA Method 24)
  • Hard wax oil topcoats: zero-VOC after curing
  • All finishes food-safe upon cure for dining surfaces
  • Allows timber to age gracefully across generations
04

BIFMA-Guided Structural Standards

Our joinery and load-bearing assemblies are designed to meet or exceed BIFMA (Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association) X5.9 durability benchmarks. We do not cut corners on joint strength or assembly fasteners.

  • Mortise-and-tenon joints withstand 40% more lateral force than dowel alternatives
  • All seating is tested for 250 lb static load per joint
  • Tabletop deflection tested to <1/8″ per 48″ span under static load
  • Artisanal Precision: From classic mortise and tenon joinery to meticulous hand-planing
05

Guild of Master Craftsmen Principles

Our artisans at Fenliy follow Guild of Master Craftsmen quality principles — biennial quality audits, joinery tolerances under 0.5 mm, and defect rates well below industry average. Every Fenliy product is built with traditional joinery techniques and natural oil finishes.

How We Document Compliance

We maintain material documentation files for every project, including:

  • Supplier CARB Phase 2 compliance certificates for any composite materials used
  • Mill and species documentation for primary timber
  • VOC data sheets for all finish products
  • Client-facing material transparency reports available upon request

Red Flags to Avoid in Custom Furniture

Unlabeled plywood cores, solvent-based stains, and missing chain-of-custody documentation are warning signs of substandard suppliers. Three critical warnings:

No VOC disclosure: Finishes should disclose emissions; avoid “polyurethane” without VOC data
“Solid wood” without species identification: Always ask for exact species and origin
Rushed kiln drying: Optimal kiln drying takes 28-45 days; rushed drying causes internal stress and future cracking

Mass-produced imports often bypass CARB Phase 2 testing — our comparison guide details what to look for.

Quality Inspection Process

Seven staged inspections occur for every custom piece crafted at 47-18 Vernon Blvd, Long Island City, NY 11101, USA:

01Raw Material: Species verification and moisture content check (target: 6-8%)
02Milling: Caliper verification of joint tolerances (±0.2 mm)
03Assembly: Squareness measured to 0.5° deviation
04Glue-up: Cure verification before stress loading
05Finishing: 3-layer coating adhesion and sheen consistency
06Pre-delivery: Load test and surface inspection
07Client delivery: White-glove placement and final walkthrough
